Holy Trinity Parish. The history of Blessed Trinity Parish begins in 1868 when Old Holy Trinity Church was established with the title of the Mother Church of Franklin County.
The people and the early pastors of Holy Trinity were pioneers in the Catholic faith and it was through their dedication and piety that Catholicism has spread so abundantly throughout Franklin County. This dedication was carried out with enthusiasm by succeeding parishioners and clergy who helped launch 10 new parishes from what was once just Holy Trinity Church. Hence the name - Mother Church of Franklin County.
Excerpts from "Holy Trinity Church: 1868-1968"
Before these new parishes were created, hundreds of Catholics from neighboring communities used to travel to Greenfield under very difficult travel conditionsto faithfully attend Sunday Mass. In the early days, all of Franklin County was considered the parish of Holy Trinity.
To look back on the first 100 years of Holy Trinity Church is to look upon a page of Greenfield’s history that is almost separate and unique in itself. It is a century of achievement in things both spiritual and material.
The 100 years of growth of Holy Trinity has represented a blend of people and personalities concerned primarily with their love of God and in having a Church where they may gather together in strength to show this love. There have been serious days and there have been happy times during Holy Trinity’s first 100 years.
Although it would seem that the non-religious elements of brick and mortar have been the keystone of Holy Trinity’s development during the past 100 years, the more overriding concern down through the years has been its spiritual purpose. By necessity the people of Holy Trinity have been involved in church-building, but they have also looked to the church for an interior growth of soul.
Its function to help people along the road to salvation has been demonstrated in many ways. Sunday Masses and other services that bring hundreds of persons into the church every week, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for young people, special devotions during the Lenten Season, Holy Communion, and other Sacraments…these are The Church.
Holy Trinity has during its 100 years done more than its share towards propagating the faith and its people have shown a religious zeal that should be the envy of any parish of equal size. Holy Trinity has from the very beginning been a source of light and inspiration to its people.
Holy Trinity has a proud past, but for those of us who know her well, her history has just begun.
Blessed Sacrament Parish. The former Blessed Sacrament Parish was established in 1960 as the Catholic population of Greenfield grew throughout the 20th century. The current building was not completed until 1970 and for ten years the new congregation worshiped in the former Holy Trinity School auditorium.
